EnquireAbout this property
Penthouse Digue de Mer occupies the top floor of a contemporary building on the sea dike at Knokke-Heist, with nothing but the promenade, the beach and the North Sea in front of it. The light here changes constantly — silvery and soft for much of the year, golden at the end of a summer evening — and the whole apartment has been designed to make the most of it.
The setting
The sea dike runs the length of the Belgian coast, and this stretch of it at Knokke-Heist combines a wide sandy beach with an easy walk to the town's shops, cafés and restaurants. From the terrace, the view extends along the coast in both directions and straight out to sea.
The residence
Completed in 2019, the penthouse is arranged on a single level of around 186 square metres. The interior follows a restrained, Nordic-coastal palette of pale oak, linen and wool in tones of grey-blue and sand, with floor-to-ceiling glass along the seaward façade. A lift arrives directly at the apartment.
Living spaces
The living room faces the sea through a wall of glass, with a deep linen sofa, a round oak table and a gas fire for cooler evenings. The kitchen, in pale oak with a stone worktop, is open to the dining area, where a long table sits beside the glazing so that meals are taken with a view of the beach.
The interior has been designed to feel calm in every kind of weather. Soft grey-blue textiles echo the colour of the North Sea, pale oak floors and joinery bring warmth, and the furniture is deliberately low so as not to interrupt the horizon. Even on an overcast day, the reflected light from the sea fills the rooms, and at night, with the curtains open, the lights of the promenade trace the line of the coast.
Bedrooms
There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The principal bedroom faces the sea through floor-to-ceiling glass and has a dressing room and its own bathroom; the two further bedrooms are quieter, on the landward side of the apartment, each with its own bathroom and built-in storage. Linen, wool and pale oak continue the calm palette of the living spaces, and the principal bedroom's glass wall means that the sea is the first thing seen on waking.
Outdoors
A wide terrace runs along the seaward façade, furnished for both lounging and dining and sheltered by glass balustrades. It is the apartment's finest room in fine weather, and at dusk, with the promenade lights coming on below, it becomes the best place to watch the sea.
Practical details
The penthouse is offered to rent and is currently under offer; enquiries remain welcome for future availability. Terms, including the length of the let and whether it is furnished, are discussed with our coastal advisor on enquiry. It suits those looking for a seaside home for a season or longer, close to the beach and the town, without the upkeep of a house and garden. The building has underground parking, and the apartment has underfloor heating and a home system for lighting and climate.
