Ibiza Beyond August: The Island’s Quieter Coasts

Whitewashed hilltop church above dry-stone terraces and almond trees in blossom, Ibiza countryside

Ibiza is best known for a few weeks of high summer. Those who live on the island all year tend to describe a different place: a countryside of dry-stone terraces and carob trees, small villages gathered around whitewashed churches, and a coastline that grows quieter with every month after August.

The south-west: Es Cubells

On the south-west coast, Es Cubells is little more than a church, a handful of houses and the road that leads to them. The church stands above the sea, and around it the land falls in pine-covered cliffs towards coves reached by steep paths. On clear days Formentera lies low on the horizon. It is a place chosen for its calm rather than its convenience, with much of its character coming from its restrained, low-key setting.

The east coast: Santa Eulària and Cala Nova

The east coast has a gentler character. Santa Eulària des Riu is a town that is lived in throughout the year, with a seafront promenade, a small marina and the whitewashed church of Puig de Missa on the hill above. Its restaurants and shops do not close when the season ends, which makes it a natural base for those who spend long periods on the island.

A little further north, Cala Nova is a sandy bay framed by pines, close to the village of Es Canar. Families return to it for its relaxed pace, and the walks along this stretch of coast are at their best in spring and autumn, when the light is softer and the paths are quiet.

The island in winter

In the interior, late winter brings the almond blossom, when the terraced valleys turn white and pale pink for a few weeks. Village markets, long lunches and empty beaches set the rhythm of the colder months. For buyers considering a home on the island, visiting outside the summer is often the most revealing way to understand a neighbourhood: how it sounds, who lives there and how it feels on an ordinary day.
